Southampton's Harbour House to be turned into Playhouse Gentlemen’s Club
11:08am Thursday 14th March 2013 in Hampshire Business
By James Franklin, Political reporter
Harbour House.
An historic building on Southampton’s waterfront will soon be home to lap dancing and strip shows.
Blackjack tables will be replaced by dancing poles after city council planners gave permission to turn the Edwardian-era Harbour House into a sexual entertainment venue called the Playhouse Gentlemen’s Club.
Fareham businessman Chris Knight’s plans have been attacked by residents of neighbouring streets who have labelled them “appalling” and claim they will turn the area into a “sleazy downmarket destination”. The interior of the building in Town Quay, which was built in 1910 and has listed status, will now be converted for its new use.
The building was previously used as Maxims Casino, while a nightclub, Club Rosso, also operated on its ground floor.
But both closed last year.
Two stages will be put in, with two poles installed on one and one on the other.
As it has been granted a sexual entertainment venue licence, it will offer lap dancing, pole dancing and strip shows.
Seven full-time staff and 48 part-time workers will be employed at the venue, which will be open from midday to 6am every day of the week and also feature a bar. But residents of the neighbouring area have reacted with anger to the news.
Sue Ridley, of The Greenwich, said: “We are appalled by this turn of events. Where is it going to stop? Are we going to turn Southampton into some sleazy downmarket destination?
“What sort of impressions will we give to the hundreds of tourists who disembark to visit the historic area of Town Quay, the QE2 Mile and SeaCity Museum? It’s a beautiful old building and it’s such a shame that we haven’t been able to do something better with it. I think it will make the whole environment in this area quite seedy, and it’s going to have a big impact.”
Neighbour Hilary Thompson said residents had had a multitude of night-time problems when Maxims casino and Club Rosso were open.
She said: “This is like a continuing nightmare for residents.
“The night time economy in Southampton is centred around Bedford Place, so the police do not have the resources to police this location separately, or properly. It’s a disaster for the area.”
As the property already has a premises licence for alcohol, the plans will not have to go before the council’s licensing committee for final approval. The only consultee able to object formally was Hampshire Constabulary, which did not raise any concerns.
John Noon, one of the area’s representatives on the city council, said: “I don’t think it’s the best place for that kind of entertainment.”

The building that is there now, is the second Harbour House to stand on that spot, the first one was built when it was just small jetty and ships use to moor in the channel, and used small boats to get goods on and off shore

It's an outrage that this building is being used for this purpose. It was bad enough that it was used for gambling but this is plumbing the depths. Surely there are other less iconic places that could host a sexual entertainment venue.

After all, the "celebs" strip in movies/papers for everyone to see to make money and the young generations have been brainwashed by heat magazines, jeremy kyle & holloak street into making relationships into some sort of game playing drama....

Sorry forgot to ask how this can go on the Waterfront, without being water themed? The Council's reason for stopping the Snow Dome (which would have been fantastic for everyone and not just males over 18) was that it wasn't water themed and they wanted water based things on the Waterfront. And yet they want to put a strip club and a supercasino on there?
I asked a Council Planning officer about the Snow Dome development and was told the Council were keen to progress it but the Developer was unable to fund it.

I certainly dont think the planned use of one of Sotons few iconic buildings is a good one.
However perhaps the powers to be are looking to follow Liverpool's cultural lead.
According to the Liverpool Echo there are NINE Lap Dancing or similar clubs in the central part of the city plus the Council is fielding an application from Spearmint Rhino for a TENTH!!
Maybe this mix helped Liverpool in its successful bid for European City of Culture

The old Tory Council really wanted to progress with it, and Developers were lined up and alot of Developers had expressed interest in developing it.
It was the newly-elected Labour Council who put a stop to it, and an Ice Rink, despite there being ridiculousy heavy demand for an Ice Rink in Southampton. This Labour Council have since become hell-bent on bringing this along with the Supercasino to the Waterfront.

I talk to Rugby coaches & one I talked to is on the committee of one of our rowing clubs using the river Itchen.
He told me the plans for the snow dome would have included a small Ice Rink & it would be constructed in a way that under it would be a purpose built Rowing club facility with slips into the river & be big enough to accommodate both clubs & they were all for it but the council stopped it dead in it's tracks citing not a water based facility his question was what do you call rowing?

I asked a Council Planning officer about the Snow Dome development and was told the Council were keen to progress it but the Developer was unable to fund it.
But in an interview with the Daily Echo, new council leader Richard Williams revealed he has killed off the plan and would be looking for an alternative development.
“We were fairly clear to officers earlier on that we didn’t want a snow dome so there’s not going to be a snow dome,” he said.
“What we want to do is develop marine activities on the waterfront.
“It could be anything in that context but it won’t be something that isn’t water related for obvious reasons.
“What we haven’t got much of in the city is access to the waterfront and to not have waterfront-based activities on the waterfront would be a bit silly in our opinion.”
So again our leader being a hypocrite as surely this strip club isn't in a water based activity is it?

I certainly dont think the planned use of one of Sotons few iconic buildings is a good one.
However perhaps the powers to be are looking to follow Liverpool's cultural lead.
According to the Liverpool Echo there are NINE Lap Dancing or similar clubs in the central part of the city plus the Council is fielding an application from Spearmint Rhino for a TENTH!!
Maybe this mix helped Liverpool in its successful bid for European City of Culture

Sarcasm aside, loosehead is right. This Williams idiot running the Council is a total hypocrite and clearly doesn't want there to be a variety of leisure options avilable within the City. I'd love for someone to come on here and explain how a strip club and a supercasino (neither of which we need and not many people want) are water based activity and the snow dome isn't?

People moaned about west quay being built, ikea(wrong location) and so on. Any aspiring City weather in the UK or around the world has to have a mix of activities, venues and so on.
But why don't the no people on these forums stop talking and start producing. Put your money where your mouth is, Buy/lease rent the sites and put the businesses their that you claim would be better. That way you would be proactive and then these forums would be very quiet cos we don't really do praise that well!

I have lived in a few places in the UK and visited many more.
This area ticks a lot of boxes for me but appreciate it falls short of what others want.
Presumably these naysayers have a choice to move away rather than moan and groan about how bad things are here.
One of the major drawbacks for development in this region has been the lack of EC and UK Grant aid which has been concentrated north of the M4 corridor.
As I has been pointed out before if Soton had received a fraction of the £2 billion given to Merseyside in the past 20 years then perhaps there would be a more reasonable comparison between the two cities.

Anyhows your Council leader will have a nice place to entertain his cronies out of that nice little pile he's put by for himself (slushy fund indeed). Also Fareham has some high profile Libdems who's used to running these sorts of place's so it will be easier to find a management.Just for good measure they will proberly employ eastern european's when they trudge over here from the summer onwards. It will add a bit of culture to the place.

How hedonistic and primitive we are. If only people found some pleasure in doing something helpful with their lives perhaps we could support ill and disabled people better and not have to be constantly shocked by revelations of neglect. Perhaps we could educate our young people by actually spending worthwhile time with them, reading, talking, looking at what's left of the natural world together.
The issue isn't where it is but what it is, and what it says about our values as a society.

I know both rowing clubs were up for the new facilities under the proposed snow dome & they are water based aren't they?
Here's an idea for the Town Quay let or ask a rowing club to use it as a clubhouse & offices & allow them to build a boathouse with a slip into the river as the old Sea Cadets had/did?
this would indeed be a water based activity wouldn't it?
I'm in no way against strip clubs but this seems to be totally in the wrong place unless Williams thinks passengers off of the cruise ships want this type of entertainment?

Realistically I remember the kick up about Tory plans for the Wool House turning into a bar or the Bargate turning into a bar,
The Bargate I was opposed to but the Wool house could have been turned into a medieval eating house & kept all it's historical characters but a strip club there? Some one said it won't be a brothel like Woolston?
No not all the women will be on the game but I've known a few strippers & some are definitely on the game.
They have a very short career so try to make as much as possible but I just don't see this as the right place do you?

All I can say is that the feedback I had from the Council officer was that there was funding issues (I think the set up cost for the private investor was approx £50m and access to this level of capital was beginning to become a problem)
Interestingly some of the tenants in the adjacent, Council owned, industrial units had been given notice to quit ahead of the proposed Snowdome development.
The Council (under the previous admin I think) had produced grand plans for 'gentrification' of the Itchen Waterfront from Itchen Bridge to the old TVS site.
btw I doubt very much if too many, if any, cruise passengers would be interested in the proposed facility.

These people running Southampton really have some original ideas. I know, let's have a 3rd strip club, a 3rd casino and a 4th cinema. We clearly don't have enough of those around here! Oooh, and while we're at it, let's add another million and one restaurants! That'll give the place some variety!

Use the local press to put pressure on the council, write letters of concern regarding issues you hold dear, keep up a relentless campaign until your council see's the error of it's ways.

Liverpool like any other city has evolved with the passing of time and I personally think that re-development of those dock area's which are deemed derelict must take place subject to strict conditions.
The " World Heritage Site " consists of 6 historic area's of the city, so I think with reasonable planning and thought any impact will be negligible.
