Southampton's Harbour House to be turned into Playhouse Gentlemen’s Club

Harbour House. Harbour House.

An historic building on Southampton’s waterfront will soon be home to lap dancing and strip shows.

Blackjack tables will be replaced by dancing poles after city council planners gave permission to turn the Edwardian-era Harbour House into a sexual entertainment venue called the Playhouse Gentlemen’s Club.

Fareham businessman Chris Knight’s plans have been attacked by residents of neighbouring streets who have labelled them “appalling” and claim they will turn the area into a “sleazy downmarket destination”. The interior of the building in Town Quay, which was built in 1910 and has listed status, will now be converted for its new use.

The building was previously used as Maxims Casino, while a nightclub, Club Rosso, also operated on its ground floor.

But both closed last year.

Two stages will be put in, with two poles installed on one and one on the other.

As it has been granted a sexual entertainment venue licence, it will offer lap dancing, pole dancing and strip shows.

Seven full-time staff and 48 part-time workers will be employed at the venue, which will be open from midday to 6am every day of the week and also feature a bar. But residents of the neighbouring area have reacted with anger to the news.

Sue Ridley, of The Greenwich, said: “We are appalled by this turn of events. Where is it going to stop? Are we going to turn Southampton into some sleazy downmarket destination?

“What sort of impressions will we give to the hundreds of tourists who disembark to visit the historic area of Town Quay, the QE2 Mile and SeaCity Museum? It’s a beautiful old building and it’s such a shame that we haven’t been able to do something better with it. I think it will make the whole environment in this area quite seedy, and it’s going to have a big impact.”

Neighbour Hilary Thompson said residents had had a multitude of night-time problems when Maxims casino and Club Rosso were open.

She said: “This is like a continuing nightmare for residents.

“The night time economy in Southampton is centred around Bedford Place, so the police do not have the resources to police this location separately, or properly. It’s a disaster for the area.”

As the property already has a premises licence for alcohol, the plans will not have to go before the council’s licensing committee for final approval. The only consultee able to object formally was Hampshire Constabulary, which did not raise any concerns.

John Noon, one of the area’s representatives on the city council, said: “I don’t think it’s the best place for that kind of entertainment.”

If this so called business man wants to run this kind of venue, then he should move to Amsterdam or Paris where his venture would fit in. More a sleaze ball than a business man.

Not quite in the same league as a lapdancing club though is it. With the chippendales you can browse the menu but not sample it. Lapdancing is a bit more close and personal.

Harbour Masters Offices.
The building that is there now, is the second Harbour House to stand on that spot, the first one was built when it was just small jetty and ships use to moor in the channel, and used small boats to get goods on and off shore

Its a strip club not a brother. Why do women have such issues with strip clubs?

Dont work there, but dont you dare look down on someone who chooses to make their money in this way.

After all, the "celebs" strip in movies/papers for everyone to see to make money and the young generations have been brainwashed by heat magazines, jeremy kyle & holloak street into making relationships into some sort of game playing drama....

Hate to say it, but I agree with Southy. If this casino can't make money, then how the hell is the proposed Supercasino a mere 200 yards away going to make tonnes of cash? Also, this is not good for the future of the city. Think about it, being on the ferry terminal this could well be some people's first impressions of the city. A strip club and a massive casino. What a place to bring the family!
I can't wait for the City of Culture awards, I really can't. I'd go if I could, just to **** myself laughing at our city chief's saying we should win.

In years gone by there were demonstrations by women against light hearted competitions like 'Miss England' and 'Miss World'. Whilst I hate to generalise, the demonstrators were the hairy armpit, anti make-up, chubby clog wearers who would never make the line up if their life depended on it. You are condemning the women who make their living in clubs like this, you aren't forced to watch and if your partner wants to visit, you should look closer to to home for the reason.

Nope, the Council, combined with the Developers have ruined it. Statistically we have the fattest kids in Hampshire, so plans for a new McDonalds come up. We've had a Titanic Museum for years, in the Maritime Museum, only for the Council to spend £5 million of the £15 million on the Sea City Museum, whilst making the main exhibit temporary. Portsmouth has done brilliantly having a shopping centre on the Waterfront, with a nice view. As soon as Southampton looked like doing something similar in Ocean Village hey guess what? It was knocked down for flats. Yippee!!! Now a casino on the Waterfront has shut, and a Supercasinio will open up, as well as a stripclub. Goody! The Snow Dome was stopped because it was on the Waterfront where apparently there "isnt enough water based things to do on the Waterfront" and then this happens! A decent Watermark scheme was replaced with a "luxury" cinema and more flipping restaurants.
And don't even get me started on the ice rink that we were promised some 25 years ago...

Which is more or less moral? A strip club or a casino?

I wouldn't worry about it in anyhing but the short term, I suspect this is just another business born to go bust.

And far better a historic building remains as far more of a real landmark than the so called "landmark" developments that cater for students but are nothing other than offensive to the eye and overwhelming for local communities!

I certainly dont think the planned use of one of Sotons few iconic buildings is a good one.
However perhaps the powers to be are looking to follow Liverpool's cultural lead.
According to the Liverpool Echo there are NINE Lap Dancing or similar clubs in the central part of the city plus the Council is fielding an application from Spearmint Rhino for a TENTH!!

The old Tory Council really wanted to progress with it, and Developers were lined up and alot of Developers had expressed interest in developing it.
It was the newly-elected Labour Council who put a stop to it, and an Ice Rink, despite there being ridiculousy heavy demand for an Ice Rink in Southampton. This Labour Council have since become hell-bent on bringing this along with the Supercasino to the Waterfront.

Women don't seem to be such shrinking violets when groups like The Chippendales perform in front of packed houses.
Not quite in the same league as a lapdancing club though is it. With the chippendales you can browse the menu but not sample it. Lapdancing is a bit more close and personal.
Rubbish !!!! Women in packs are like dogs on heat with male strippers
That would be **** then ;-)
Looks like the name given to female dogs has been banned by the censor.

Sorry forgot to ask how this can go on the Waterfront, without being water themed? The Council's reason for stopping the Snow Dome (which would have been fantastic for everyone and not just males over 18) was that it wasn't water themed and they wanted water based things on the Waterfront. And yet they want to put a strip club and a supercasino on there?
Would be interested to know where you got this info from?
I asked a Council Planning officer about the Snow Dome development and was told the Council were keen to progress it but the Developer was unable to fund it.
Phil it was in this paper that Cllr Williams was withdrawing permission for the Snow dome development because it wasn't water themed enough.
I talk to Rugby coaches & one I talked to is on the committee of one of our rowing clubs using the river Itchen.
He told me the plans for the snow dome would have included a small Ice Rink & it would be constructed in a way that under it would be a purpose built Rowing club facility with slips into the river & be big enough to accommodate both clubs & they were all for it but the council stopped it dead in it's tracks citing not a water based facility his question was what do you call rowing?

Phil look at this from an Echo article.
But in an interview with the Daily Echo, new council leader Richard Williams revealed he has killed off the plan and would be looking for an alternative development.

“We were fairly clear to officers earlier on that we didn’t want a snow dome so there’s not going to be a snow dome,” he said.

“What we want to do is develop marine activities on the waterfront.

“It could be anything in that context but it won’t be something that isn’t water related for obvious reasons.

“What we haven’t got much of in the city is access to the waterfront and to not have waterfront-based activities on the waterfront would be a bit silly in our opinion.”
So again our leader being a hypocrite as surely this strip club isn't in a water based activity is it?

I certainly dont think the planned use of one of Sotons few iconic buildings is a good one.
However perhaps the powers to be are looking to follow Liverpool's cultural lead.
According to the Liverpool Echo there are NINE Lap Dancing or similar clubs in the central part of the city plus the Council is fielding an application from Spearmint Rhino for a TENTH!!
Maybe this mix helped Liverpool in its successful bid for European City of Culture
Liverpool is much bigger than Southampton, and there is plenty on offer in addition to strip clubs. You can't really say the same about Southampton, there are hardly even any decent places to drink.

I sincerely hope that this alternative development that Williams is seeking instead of the Snow Dome includes some highly overpriced "luxury apartments" where the illegal immigrant is King and can live in there rent free instead of being deported.

Sarcasm aside, loosehead is right. This Williams idiot running the Council is a total hypocrite and clearly doesn't want there to be a variety of leisure options avilable within the City. I'd love for someone to come on here and explain how a strip club and a supercasino (neither of which we need and not many people want) are water based activity and the snow dome isn't?

Believe you me, we would if we could! But we are just ordinary people with limited money. What should happen is the powers that be should ask us, the people of the City what we want in our City and then they try and talk to the right people to get it built. And not what they think we need, because they constantly keep getting it wrong

I have a degree of sympathy with this post.
I have lived in a few places in the UK and visited many more.
This area ticks a lot of boxes for me but appreciate it falls short of what others want.
Presumably these naysayers have a choice to move away rather than moan and groan about how bad things are here.
One of the major drawbacks for development in this region has been the lack of EC and UK Grant aid which has been concentrated north of the M4 corridor.
As I has been pointed out before if Soton had received a fraction of the £2 billion given to Merseyside in the past 20 years then perhaps there would be a more reasonable comparison between the two cities.

Anyhows your Council leader will have a nice place to entertain his cronies out of that nice little pile he's put by for himself (slushy fund indeed). Also Fareham has some high profile Libdems who's used to running these sorts of place's so it will be easier to find a management.Just for good measure they will proberly employ eastern european's when they trudge over here from the summer onwards. It will add a bit of culture to the place.

Sad that money circulates so readily around sex and entertainment while we resent contributing to a healthy social infrastructure.
How hedonistic and primitive we are. If only people found some pleasure in doing something helpful with their lives perhaps we could support ill and disabled people better and not have to be constantly shocked by revelations of neglect. Perhaps we could educate our young people by actually spending worthwhile time with them, reading, talking, looking at what's left of the natural world together.
The issue isn't where it is but what it is, and what it says about our values as a society.

Who knows maybe Williams is a close friend of the Libdem in Fareham?
Realistically I remember the kick up about Tory plans for the Wool House turning into a bar or the Bargate turning into a bar,
The Bargate I was opposed to but the Wool house could have been turned into a medieval eating house & kept all it's historical characters but a strip club there? Some one said it won't be a brothel like Woolston?
No not all the women will be on the game but I've known a few strippers & some are definitely on the game.

I am sure The Echo article reports Cllr Williams correctly.
All I can say is that the feedback I had from the Council officer was that there was funding issues (I think the set up cost for the private investor was approx £50m and access to this level of capital was beginning to become a problem)
Interestingly some of the tenants in the adjacent, Council owned, industrial units had been given notice to quit ahead of the proposed Snowdome development.
The Council (under the previous admin I think) had produced grand plans for 'gentrification' of the Itchen Waterfront from Itchen Bridge to the old TVS site.
btw I doubt very much if too many, if any, cruise passengers would be interested in the proposed facility.

Granted there are some decent restaurants. There is also a decent cinema in Odeon. Granted Cineworld is sh1t, but the upside to that is that its cheap. There is also a decent cinema in Vue, albeit that's in Eastleigh, it is easily accessible to Southampton folk. Two decent cinemas nearby is enough for most people. Hate to say it, but what this city really needs is an ice rink, as it would be beneficial to nearly everyone and would attract people from all over the South. A large concert venue similar to the BIC in Bournemouth wouldn't go a miss either

Here's an idea for the Town Quay let or ask a rowing club to use it as a clubhouse & offices & allow them to build a boathouse with a slip into the river as the old Sea Cadets had/did?
this would indeed be a water based activity wouldn't it?
I'm in no way against strip clubs but this seems to be totally in the wrong place unless Williams thinks passengers off of the cruise ships want this type of entertainment?
I can't wait to see the looks on the faces of families when they get off the Ferry/Cruise Ship and see a strip club and a large supercasino and nothing leisurewise for families to do

You don't have to tell me, Liverpool is light years ahead of Southampton in every considerable aspect.

These people running Southampton really have some original ideas. I know, let's have a 3rd strip club, a 3rd casino and a 4th cinema. We clearly don't have enough of those around here! Oooh, and while we're at it, let's add another million and one restaurants! That'll give the place some variety!
Quantity does not mean quality. There are a handful of decent restaurants in Southampton. Everything else is sh1t.

Why no Ice Rink? Have you ever been to one? I like many other people on here thought no towards an ice rink. Then one Saturday I went to a Basingstoke Bison Ice Hockey match and changed my opinion instantly. Everyone I know whose been to an ice hockey match has loved it and it inspires people to take up skating. And ice rinks arent just used for hockey, there also used for figure skating as well as ice dance shows and just general skating. Ice Hockey matches are also well attended with attendances often topping 1,000 each week. Rinks are actually better off than people down here give them credit for

The Council own the land where the Snow Dome was to be cited, that gives them a choice about who they sell the land to for what purpose. They do not own this building and have merely granted planning permission, one assumes, in line with planning law/policy. They are not in a position to demand that private landlords lease properties on the waterside to businesses for 'water based' activities only.

What about a large arena concert venue that can double as an ice rink? Such things exist. Not saying their shouldn't be a stand-alone ice rink, it just shouldn't be high priority.

That would be an excellent idea. Just what this city needs. Instead of all this crap, build a concert venue/ice rink. That would attract the tourists in, would put Southampton on the map and maybe, just maybe give us a chance of winning this "City of Culture" thing. Cos at the moment, the only way we'll win is if Portsmouth is the most cultural city in the World, and it drags us over the finish line!

Rally all your art , music , history , civic and education establishments , organisations and societies together.
Get the population of Southampton behind the bid and petition your councillors and city council that you expect better from them.

Use the local press to put pressure on the council, write letters of concern regarding issues you hold dear, keep up a relentless campaign until your council see's the error of it's ways.
Go to your elected councillors surgeries and leave them in no doubt about your lack of faith in the way the city is run.
Nothing will change unless you the population of Southampton do something about it.

Ask the Council. I really would love to see their response, I really would. Everyone would have loved to have seen the Snow Dome in Southampton. As for the planning permission/licence thing I'm not sure because the building already has a licence to serve alcohol, and the article says that the only organisation who could object was Hampshire Constabulary, who didn't. Did the club in Woolston already have a licence to sell alcohol?
Still, I'm sure the Council will come up with good reasons for why the Snow Dome inc Ice Rink wasn't "water-based" enough, and a block of "seaview" flats is perfectly water based when the time comes.
On another topic, how on Earth they think the Bargate Centre can carry on as retail is completely beyond me...

The Liverpool Waters scheme starts north of Princes dock and should have no adverse effect on the vista of the Pier Head area.
Liverpool like any other city has evolved with the passing of time and I personally think that re-development of those dock area's which are deemed derelict must take place subject to strict conditions.
The " World Heritage Site " consists of 6 historic area's of the city, so I think with reasonable planning and thought any impact will be negligible.

More flats? God help us! How can they leave the Bargate Centre as it is? It's run down, and well past its sellby date now and needs to be changed. Given the current high-street crisis, how can they even think about putting shops in? This was done by Leisure Boss Warwick Payne, whose idea of Leisure is shops, flats and officies.
Also, just out of interest, if they build more walls off the Bargate, presumably to revitalise the heritage, will it actually be heritage because the walls will be brand new instead of in there medieval state?

If you could take all the hot air and negativity on most of these forums. Our city would be Super Rich.

People moaned about west quay being built, ikea(wrong location) and so on. Any aspiring City weather in the UK or around the world has to have a mix of activities, venues and so on.

But why don't the no people on these forums stop talking and start producing. Put your money where your mouth is, Buy/lease rent the sites and put the businesses their that you claim would be better. That way you would be proactive and then these forums would be very quiet cos we don't really do praise that well!
Phil why no response to the post where I showed you proof of what Williams said?
I know both rowing clubs were up for the new facilities under the proposed snow dome & they are water based aren't they?
Here's an idea for the Town Quay let or ask a rowing club to use it as a clubhouse & offices & allow them to build a boathouse with a slip into the river as the old Sea Cadets had/did?
this would indeed be a water based activity wouldn't it?
I'm in no way against strip clubs but this seems to be totally in the wrong place unless Williams thinks passengers off of the cruise ships want this type of entertainment?
I can't wait to see the looks on the faces of families when they get off the Ferry/Cruise Ship and see a strip club and a large supercasino and nothing leisurewise for families to do
Maybe they'll opt for Liverpool instead?
At least the view as they embark / disembark here in Liverpool is a " World Heritage Site ".
But for how much longer?
The World Heritage accolade is under threat from the proposed Liverpool Waters deveopment scheme.
You are correct about the positioning of the planned Liverpool Waters scheme and there are differing views about whether the threat of UNESCO pulling Liverpool from their 'World Hertitage Site' list is correct.
Personally I think it is daft.
Fact is there is a threat and this has been discussed in many publications including the Architects Journal.
I am surprised you have not been following the debate in the Liverpool Echo.
Their journalist, David Bartlett, has written a number of articles on the matter

Rowing Club! Really?! I love all your comments about how the city doesnt want this club, More like YOU dont want it because your sooo stuck up and rigid you could never entertain having a 'laugh'could you. Maybe you should go along when it opens and you will see its not seedy or dirty but its actually a nice place to have a drink and see beautiful ladies that want to be looked at! Get a life, give the world a break and it might not be as bad as you think! Or move to Winchester with the rest of the up their own!!!!!!!!!

Not too mention of course that there are already two fully functioning strip clubs within the city...

I'm not a prude but this is pretty disgusting.

An ICONIC building right on the waterfront too!

I sincerely hope this doesn't happen.

City of Culture, more like City of Sleaze!

I may write a letter to the paper...

Even a restaurant would be better for this building wouldn't it?
They said Woolston was a residential area & the wrong area for the adults club well what about the residents around the Town Quay area?
