AN EVENT which aimed to showcase entrepreneurial spirit in Basingstoke and Deane has been recognised by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

Tech week, which was held in November last year, aimed to grow the digital economy and raise the profile of the area. The event gave local small businesses the opportunity to learn more about subjects such as digital marketing, cyber-security, smart technologies, disruptive competitors, business law and intellectual property through interactive workshops delivered by experts.

Organised by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, in partnership with SETsquared, the event won the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Most Innovative Programme, Campaign or Project Award at the annual Small Business Friendly Awards ceremony.

The first ever Basingstoke Hack Weekend was a highlight of the week, bringing together top digital developers and technically-savvy entrepreneurs for an intensive weekend of developing smart technology solutions for real-life challenges.

Judges were impressed with the way in which the tech week programme helped local small businesses to get a unique opportunity to learn more about all things digital.

Neil Eames, development manager for Wessex at the FSB said: “We are delighted to acknowledge Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for their commitment to providing support for small businesses.

“The council’s ‘Get connected – Digital Tech Week’ programme, combined with Basingstoke’s first ever Hack Weekend, represents a significant commitment by the council to provide a range of initiatives to help support local small businesses.

“Our awards aim to publicly recognise the important work undertaken by local authorities, in supporting the micro and small business community.”

Tim Colman, FSB chairman for Hampshire and Isle of Wight, will present a certificate to the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Councillor Paul Frankum, at a full council meeting on Thursday, 26 October.
