THE deal that sees a hi-tech Hampshire electronics plant change hands completed yesterday with no update on what the transfer might mean for its 400 workers.

Bosses at Southampton’s NXP Semiconductors have refused to confirm the site’s future and it is believed that up to 110 jobs could go.

The former Phillips plant yesterday transferred to the ownership of US technology company Trident Microsytems, which could not be reached for comment about its plans.

Site managing director Barry Dennington has previously declined to comment on the site’s future, saying its future would be “up to Trident” to decide once the merger goes through.

He said: “It is correct that there will be job losses at the Southampton site. On October 5 NXP announced a merger with Trident to form an industry leader in digital television products.

“That deal will be completed on February 8. As a result of the merger there will be some job losses. We don’t quote numbers in these situations so we can’t share that sort of information.”

Mr Dennington said cuts were a result of a “fusion of products” produced by NXP and Trident and would affect the “technical community” which currently develops NXP’s products.

He said they would come in the third quarter of the year between the start of January and the end of March 2010 and that talks were being held with employee representatives.
