Storms snapped Clipper Round the World Race yacht's mast

PSP to the rescue PSP to the rescue

DRAMATIC storms snapped the mast of one of the Clipper Round the World Race yachts and would have ruined the competition but for a Hampshire logistics firm.

Segensworth-based PSP managed to ship a replacement 15m mast from Devon to San Francisco in five days so the race could continue.

The team from PSP, best known for sponsoring Southampton’s Boat Show, leapt into action to transport the mast from Devon to Luxembourg by road and ferry, then to Los Angeles by air before it was taken on to San Francisco by road.

PSP managing director, Frank Dixie, said: “This was brilliant work by our team. I don’t think we could have got it there any quicker. They really pulled out all the stops.”

Pete Rollason, skipper of the stricken yacht California, said: “It’s great to see our replacement mast here so swiftly and it’s clearly been a great team effort by all concerned. We look forward to getting the rig tuned up in readiness for the next stage.”

Founded by Sir Robin Knox- Johnston, Clipper Ventures is based in Gosport and sees amateurs crew 70ft yachts in a gruelling 37,000-mile race across the world’s oceans.
