RECYCLING specialist Waste-IT has announced the region’s first WEEE Amnesty Week.

The company, based in Winchester Road, Basingstoke, which also looks to reuse Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) will be holding the initiative from Monday, September 26 to Friday, September 30.

The initiative is the idea of Sam Prentice, Waste-IT’s general manager, and it is designed to help local businesses dispose of unwanted electrical items responsibly, in line with Government guidelines.

Waste-IT is inviting companies to call its dedicated collections hotline on 01256 357 351 (OK) or email recycling @waste-it.co.uk (OK) in advance of September 26 to arrange a free preferred collection time and date for all types of unwanted electrical items including PCs, printers, and scanners.

Fully licensed by the Environment Agency, the company will subsequently transport the items to its specialist recycling facility in Winchester Road. Here, they will be broken down into their component parts prior to being smelted or crushed into raw materials for use in the manufacture of new goods.

Sam said: “Not all businesses recognise that they are legally responsible for disposing of unwanted items properly.

“Gone are the days when it’s okay to simply throw items in to the bin or nearby skip. Not only is it environmentally irresponsible, but with the growth in identity fraud, it can also be very risky.

“By launching ‘WEEE Amnesty Week’ we aim to help further educate the public why it’s so important to divert recyclable materials from landfill.”

Any potential reuse items collected by the company are checked and PAT tested (Portable Appliance Testing), ready for resale. And for guaranteed data security, all data is wiped and destroyed before resale.
