Chewing over the skills gap
A lack of skilled personnel is a major concern in the engineering industry
A lack of skilled personnel is a major concern in the engineering industry

BETA is holding its third Engineering Employers Breakfast Forum at Basingstoke's BETA training centre on February 6, from 8am to 10am.

The free breakfast seminar addresses the issues of skills gaps in the engineering sector - providing delegates with an opportunity to network among fellow employers in the engineering sector.

A recent Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) report revealed that 20,000 construction and engineering jobs are currently unfilled due to the shortage of skilled personnel.

Nearly 50 per cent of the companies surveyed by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) recruited from overseas in the past 12 months to cover specific skills shortages.

The lack of skilled personnel is a major concern for the engineering industry. The recruitment and retention of experienced staff is a significant problem, and there is pressure to provide additional training to address the skills gaps of new recruits.

The BETA Breakfast Forum will tackle the issue of this skills gap, questioning how the national picture reflects businesses in Basingstoke.

After a welcome from George Batho, HR director of Linde Materials Handling, training manager Terence Murrell, of Huawei, will discuss a European focus on the corporate perspective within the Huawei organisation.

Alan Maskwell, commercial director of engineering with TAC Europe, will explain how TAC Europe can provide recruitment solutions.

Alan Gwyer, strategy and partnerships director of BCOT, will provide an update on the Young Apprenticeship scheme, and Chris Wright, head of engineering at BCOT, will outline the skills gap in relation to Basingstoke. The event will be held at BETA, in Joule Road, Basingstoke.
