WORKS from three of the greatest Russian composers will be performed in Basingstoke next month.

The St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra will be at The Anvil on Friday, 13 October at 7.45pm.

The evening will begin with Prokofiev’s lively Classical Symphony, which takes Haydn’s symphonies as its affectionate model, updating the form to the early twentieth century.

This will be followed by RimskyKorsakov’s Scheherazade, an Arabian Nights’ fantasy full of memorable moments as the beautiful Scheherazade spins enthralling tales.

And finally, Tchaikovsky’s powerful Fourth Symphony is one of his most successful works.

The opening fanfare, said to represent the power of fate, is followed by a lyrical slow movement and pizzicato scherzo.

In the finale the fanfare returns to striking effect as the work drives to its thrilling conclusion.

The concert will be led by Vladimir Altschuler, who has been the conductor at the orchestra since 1994.

Tickets for the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra cost between £14 to £40; under 16s and full-time student tickets are £10.
