ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO FRIDAY, 28 DECEMBER 1883 CLATFORD – DEATH OF MR. WM. TASKER Depression was cast over the Christmas festival in this village by the death, on Sunday last, at the age of 53 years, of Mr. William Tasker, of the Manor House, Manor Green, the senior member of the eminent firm of Tasker & Sons; and the regret felt at his loss will doubtless extend itself through the wide circle of that gentlemen’s friends and acquaintances. The deceased gentleman commenced his business life an early age, and his face was familiar and much appreciated in many of the market towns in Hants and Wilts.

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO FRIDAY, 21 DECEMBER 1883 THE POSTMASTER-GENERAL The Postmaster-General desires to call attention to the fact that the least desirable manner in which appreciation can be shown of the labours of the postmen during the Christmas and New Year season is to offer them drink whilst in the discharge of their official duties. This is an act of mistaken kindness, which might bring them into trouble and disgrace. The Postmaster-General earnestly hopes that the public will refrain from putting such temptation in their way.

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO FRIDAY, 14 DECEMBER 1883 THE MOODY AND SANKEY NAVVIES On Monday evening a large temperance meeting, composed chiefly of working men, was held in the Foresters’ Hall, for the purpose of hearing Messrs. Dinham and Symes, two converted navvies, who were styled the “Moody and Sankey navvies.”
