Asda set March opening
ASDA'S £20 million Andover store will open on 10 March and be able to sell alcohol around the clock - after Test Valley Borough Council's licensing committee decided there were no good reasons to refuse permission.
Police withdrew their objection following further discussions with Asda while two residents of South Street who had submitted formal written objections did not press their case at Tuesday morning's hearing in the Guildhall.
Both residents believed permission would lead to greater noise and disturbance.
Asda, represented by solicitor Clare Johnson, countered by saying they already had significant experience of running town centre shops.
"Asda has never been prosecuted for under-age sales since the 2003 act came in and comes out on top of the list for refused test purchases," she said.
"I am aware that two residents have lodged representations but it is fair to say they are about what could happen not what will happen.
"The vast majority of residents have not felt the need to do so or do not see anything of concern."
While she accepted that no system was foolproof there would be a minimum of 40 staff and two managers and a specially trained security officer on night duty and all were trained to spot potential troublemakers.
At 10.30pm every night there was a night huddle' where information was passed on and staff reminded of their obligations particularly where the sale of alcohol was concerned.
When open store manager Les Clemo, will also invite residents to a meeting where they will be kept informed and advised of how they can bring complaints to Asda's attention.
Sgt Dave Wright, from Andover police, said it was necessary to get into the mindset of the idiot fraternity' so they would get the message that they wouldn't be welcome.

So obviously that one of main reason why there has been such an increase in anti socialable behaviour is the ease in getting hold of cheap booze...so yet another outlet for the youngsters to obtain drink to p*ss themselves stupid.

Would just like to say to "Victor" that not all Tesco staff that work at the River Way store are Rude, and do not help when asked.
There are Still a fair few of us left that do our best to help.
The opening of Asda Will be a big shock to The River Way Tesco, as they will see less customers.
I will also be a Asda Shopper.
Have always liked Asda more then Tesco.
But we will Have to see what sort of Stock Asda sale and see if they try to sale out of date stock like tesco.
Saw some today when i was in Tesco, told the member of staff who was close to the stock, and they said it was not down to them, They were told to put the price down by high management.

well done asda!
the supermarket with personality (2007 ad campaign) might add a bit more sparcle to y weekly shop.
Tesco think they are fooling customers by saying thingz are "half price". easy to say when it's on products that naturally come down in value at this time of year, i'm more interested in super markets that sell at true honest value!! but still stocks good quality produce... my vote is on ASDA. i wont be shopping at tesco thats for sure!!

It's a pity that the Asda store is (a) parked right in the middle of a residential area (what's wrong with the ghost town of Walworth Industrial Estate); (b) quite obviously too small to stock a huge range of goods and (c) there's no petrol station to give the cartel of Andover a run for their money. Hasn't anyone else noticed how fuel keeps creeping up another penny a litre? It's outrageous robbery.

Nevermind about Tesco what about Sainsbury just over the road. It's already half empty. I think your'll see that store close very quickly once Asda opens.
I heard that the cinema is a no go now, is this true?

Well, its started.
I live by Asda and thought at 9pm last Friday night that I'd nip in and buy one of their excellent curries.
Walking along the new path to the side of ASDA i was greeted by sick splattered along it, nicely sat next to an empty can of Stella lager.
Thinking this would be isolated I happily bought my curry and proceeded to walk back along the path to my home.
A group of 4 youths then started swearing at me from further up the path. Luckily I was bigger than they were so they started to run back inside the car park. A drunken youth then swore at me again and threw a half drank can of lager at me, missing by inches. He then ran off laughing.
Now bear in mind that this happened on a very cold evening. I dread to think how things will be like in the summer months, especially for women walking the same route.
Yes these kids shouldnt be out at night and their parents are at fault for that. But conversely the idiots who agreed to a 24 hour booze licence for this store should ask their wives/girlfriends to walk this new pathway one evening and see how they like being intimidated by drunken yobs.
Jake.
