Sir George's battle for more railway parking continues
NORTH-WEST Hampshire MP Sir George Young is continuing his campaign for more car parking at Grateley, Andover, Whitchurch and Overton railway stations.
During a transport debate in the House of Commons he asked: "Does the minister agree that a major constraint on the capacity of the rail network is the capacity of station car parks?
"Will he have urgent discussions with Network Rail and South West Trains with a view to increasing capacity on the Waterloo to Salisbury line, so that more people who want to travel by train off-peak can do so?"
He was told that while the Government accepted that enhanced car park capacity encouraged more people to use the railways, parking facilities were a matter not for the Government but for local authorities, Network Rail and, occasionally, the train operating companies.

More car parking space, at least at Whitchurch, will lead to more people commuting from Newbury and leaving their car at Whitchurch station. Firstly, make it more attractive for those (where Newbury would be their nearest station) who commute from Newbury via Whitchurch to use Newbury instead......improve Newbury station, reliability and overcrowding on route to London. Secondly, if Newbury is to remain unchanged with no improvements, implement parking restrictions on roads near Whitchurch station for residents only, increase charges for long stays (over 8 hours) and make better use of space available (roundabout used for parking etc).
More car parking spaces for small stations just means more commuters from Newbury who dislike going to London via Reading. Add another 50 spaces and they will be full by 9am weekdays as soon as word gets round.
