Store wars!
Battling it out: The site for the new Sainsbury's store.
Battling it out: The site for the new Sainsbury's store.

SAINSBURY'S is the latest supermarket giant to make its stand in Andover's store wars as it prepares to move into the old Focus DIY building.

The store, which has occupied its current premises in Borden Gate for just over two years, has been competing for customers against the newly-opened Asda and the 24 hour Tesco through intense advertising.

Andover now has five supermarkets (Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda, Waitrose and Lidl) all vying for customers.

In the weeks leading up to Asda's official opening on 7 March the majority of the town's supermarkets battled it out in the pages of The Andover Advertiser and The Midweek Advertiser.

Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's have each used multiple adverts to bring in more customers.

Some of the stores have also been distributing leaflets to hundreds of homes to keep the attention of their customers and to encourage more through their doors.

Sainsbury's will be moving to a site on the edge of town at the Enham Arch roundabout previously occupied by Focus DIY.

Building work is already underway for a complete refit and refurbishment.

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said the new store would increase the provision of shopping in the town for its customers.

"Sainsbury's has been looking to improve its offer to Andover shoppers for some time and the opportunity of purchasing the store at Shepherds Spring Lane emerged following the decision by Focus DIY to cease trading from the site," she said.

And she added: "The town centre store remains unaffected by our occupation of the former Focus DIY building."

Asda us far from pedestrian friendly! also it is quite a walk to the nearest bus stop or even taxi rank. Not everyone drives but they don't seem to think of this today! I think this store was built in the wrong part of town plus i am not too keen on escalators or lifts before i can shop. As the big Tesco is my corner shop i will continue to shop there as i've never been too impressed with Sainsbury's or Asda to shop in

All i say is bring on the larger Sainsbury's as with the impact of Asda aswell it will give Tesco the major competiton that been over due for a long time.

Will Sainsburys be improving the carpark at the old Focus site to make it larger?

And great, 'another' supermarket, like Andover needs another one of those (at least it isn't another coffee-shop)

I used to live in Andover(charlton) and I worked at Asda, Eastleigh. Asda really know how to target the audience, they will have all the best offers and in time will capture their part of the local trade as will all the others, there is plenty of trade for all to share, will take a while to settle. You dont know how good you have it compared to Oz, we still have Safeways(woolworths) and Coles, not much choice in the way of supermarkets. We just had Aldi come to Oz,now that shook them up a bit.

cant wait to see the new asda when i come back to visit family and friends.

At long last the time has come for Tesco to lose their dominance in Andover. Without any real competition they have profiteered from this position for some 16 years??
We have had to put up with 2nd rate produce service, broken promises (remember the advert about opening another checkout) and un competitive pricing. Many of their own brands are unusable and questionable value for money. Their inferior quality petrol is often dearer than proper fuel from reputable filling stations. I last shopped there in 1992 when my wife purchased some inedible meat and they could not have cared less. So at last the "up yours" approach will have to be addressed and they will have to start to take customer service seriously and hopefully provide better quality produce and some decent trained staff and we hope at a competitive price. If only people would consider what Tesco has done to them for all these years and now teach them a lesson by shopping elsewhere! At last it may be pay back time for years of commercial abuse!

Well put Richard, commercial abuse is probably the right terminology. Andover and its people have been disadvantaged by the lack of competiton. Tescos will have to wake up now as Asda & Sainsburys will be expecting half of their trade.

Only Half their trade!!! I was sort of hoping they'd lose all of it.

Asda will appeal to a vast majority of Andover public, given choice the public will vote with their feet. They will be curious and will check out what Asda has to offer and will then vote with their wallets. Unlike Tesco Asda do not offer loyalty points as they put the discounts back into the everyday shop, Tesco are famous for sending you loyalty vouchers for items you have no interest in purchasing. I used to get dog food and cat food vouchers, duh!!! I never had a cat or a dog... this is a classic way for Tesco to ensure they dont give back to the customer all of the face value of the vouchers.

Asda will have the best 2 for 1, 3 for 2 deals around, having worked at Asda I never went back to Tesco....

I would just like to point out that the Petrol at Tesco is no way inferior to main stream fuel stations, their fuel is tankered from the same depots as Esso so therfore is the same, people say its watered down, thats rubbish, you cannot water down petrol....

I hope that Asda enjoys the custom in Andover, they will put the ching ching back into the customers pockets unlike Tesco who try to take your very last penny....

We are happy in Australia as an ex top chief of Asda has joined one of the large supermarket chains down under, it is said that he will turn round the way aussies shop... cant wait

enjoy Asda ..... ching ching

it's not just supermarkets andover has to put up with charity shops, fast food outlets, small retailers that charge over the odds, cheap fashion shops, all because the local council is made up of those owners of the shops mentioned above!
andover needs larger decent retail stores that offer quality clothing - what we have at the moment is a market stall in a building nothing more - buy cheap it won't last.
thankfully we have m&s, dorothy perkins, next (out of town), but that's it..... personally andover sucks.....and until there are more department stores, better retailers, better restaurants, it will continue to be the dump that it is......if u want decent shops you have to travel to basingstoke or southampton or maybe salisbury......and with expensive and useless transport services most andoverians are stuck and have to buy their clothes in bon marche (which is the french word for "cheap" - say no more

Maybe you should read more stories inside the "Andover Advertiser" there has been many comments about a New Good restaurant opening up in town.
I for one, am looking forward to this,
This is the start of things to come.

With the building of 2500 new homes in Andover will bring new people, this will mean Andover will get bigger, and with more people These big shops will come, but don't think this will happen over night.
That also does mean Tesco will have to get a lot better if they want these people to shop with them.
Asda has just opened up, so it all nice and new, lets just hope they can keep it that way.

And for your comment about "personally andover sucks" I used to think that myself but I changed my mind.
