‘Megashed madness’ – MEP joins the battle
MEP of South East England and principal speaker for The Green Party Caroline Lucas (third from right) meets with Tesco warehouse STOP protesters Peter Derbyshire, Rhonda Smith, Peter Parfrey and Marc Catchpole.
MEP of South East England and principal speaker for The Green Party Caroline Lucas (third from right) meets with Tesco warehouse STOP protesters Peter Derbyshire, Rhonda Smith, Peter Parfrey and Marc Catchpole.

MEP for the south east and principal speaker for the Green Party, Dr Caroline Lucas, will be throwing her weight behind the campaign against the Tesco megashed plan.

She visited Andover this week to see the Andover Airfield site for herself and speak to the STOP protesters.

Dr Lucas said that she would be writing to Test Valley Borough Council expressing her concerns about a development that she described as being madness'.

She said: "The size of this thing, its just too big for this location, it sounds as if it's too big for any location.

"I'm someone who's very much into promoting local foods, local consumption and production and all that stuff about climate change, and lots of reasons why you should be shortening food chains not lengthening them.

"So I've already got a concern about that. But to put something of this size in such a rural location I think is madness."

After speaking to campaigners she said she thought that the Tesco distribution centre - which is the biggest part of a proposed development by Goodman - was in the wrong place.

She was also concerned about the traffic impact, the impact on climate, noise and disturbance.

She said she would be speaking to Goodman and Tesco to get a balanced view. "But from what I've heard so far I just can't imagine what they will say that's somehow going to make what I've heard any better."

Dr Lucas will also be looking to see if there is a European angle. She added: "However, as someone who represents the views people in the south east I will certainly be writing to the local council adding my voice."

Caroline Lucas, the queen of the NIMBYs, rides again. She says "not in my back yard" to everything. Once in a while she is likely to be right - just like a stopped clock - and perhaps she is on this.

What you can expect is that she would know absolutely nothing at all about this proposal and is just speaking out to the press so as to get more publicity for herself.
