Work starts on new centre for recycling
RESIDENTS who use Andover's Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) can soon look forward to having an improved facility, as construction begins on a bigger and better site.
The new centre - work on which was due to start on Monday - will replace the existing Hampshire County Council facility on Shepherd's Spring Lane, which is due to close at the end of the year when the new site opens to the public.
A spokeswoman said the location and size of the current Andover site had made it increasingly unsuitable for the level of usage it received, often resulting in congestion during busy periods.
The new site will be considerably larger and will incorporate an improved, split-level layout providing an area dedicated entirely to customers, with service vehicles having separate access.
This will remove the need to temporarily close the site to the public during bin changeovers, reducing queuing times significantly.
For busier periods there will be significant onsite stacking capacity to prevent cars queuing on the road outside the entrance.
"The new site will also be able to accommodate more containers, so that a greater proportion of household waste can be accepted for recycling," added the spokeswoman.
This will help to in-crease the amount of materials recycled at Andover in line with the countywide target of achieving an average recycling rate of 65 per cent at all recycling centres. The site is at Scott Close, Walworth Indus-trial Estate.
