Once upon a time: Author David Orme takes his seat in the storytelling circle at Portway Junior School to talk about his books to pupils who took part in a theme week learning about lifestyles and cultures.

PUPILS at Portway Junior School travelled around the world experiencing many different cultures during their theme week - without setting foot outside the school.

The pupils engaged in a range of language, art, religious and environmental activities that have excited their imagination and developed their learning. In Asia' the children painted Mehandi designs that were used in Indian dance and in Europe' the pupils learned to speak conversational Spanish.

On a tour of South America' pupils travelled up the Amazon River and through the rainforest and in Australia' the pupils explored the bush and created paintings of Aboriginal life using genuine Aboriginal techniques.

The week culminated in a visit from the well-known children's author David Orme. He shared his expertise of ancient civilisations.

This was a perfect opportunity to use the school's new storytelling circle, designed by the pupils and sponsored by Whitebread Ltd through The Portway Inn.
