Station drama to be investigated by Dorset officers
DORSET Police are to investigate how an innocent man was pinned down by firearms officers after an incident in Basingstoke.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has decided that an investigation into the incident at Bournemouth Train Station on Saturday will be handled by Dorset officers.
Hampshire Constabulary, British Transport Police and Dorset Police were all involved, following reports that a man was threatened with an imitation firearm in Festival Place shopping centre in Basingstoke during office hours on Saturday.
Acting on the description released by Hampshire Constabulary, armed officers from Dorset Police swooped on a 21-year-old black man, just before 6pm, at Bournemouth train station.
The man was taken to Bournemouth police station, but it quickly became clear it was a case of mistaken identity and he was released immediately.
The IPCC received a referral from Dorset Police on Sunday and decided yesterday that the matter could be dealt with locally.
As the investigation will cover three police forces it will be carried out under the supervision of the IPCC.
The IPCC has discussed this with all three forces and has agreed that Dorset Police's professional standards department will take the lead in the investigation.
