FOUR young people who live in supported housing in Andover will appear on Thames Valley Tonight on Wednesday as part of ITV Fixers.

The programme challenges anyone aged between 16 and 25 to do something about an issue they care about.

Richard Hollis, aged 21, Liam Hookings, aged 18, and Trigger Gater and Chantazia Day, both aged 24, are all homeless, but have found refuge in the Foyer movement, which offers support and guidance, as well as accommodation, to young people living rough.

They now want to change attitudes towards homeless people.

Chantazia said: "There are many different reasons why young people leave their homes and families. Very often it's not our fault.

"We don't all sleep in doorways. We aren't all scruffy and smelly. And we're not all beggars."

With the help of ITV Fixers, the youngsters are devising a drama to present in schools and youth clubs in the Andover area.

They also plan to produce a leaflet to distribute to other homeless people with advice on such things as support groups, housing associations and benefits.

The story of the Andover Foyer project will be told in Thames Valley Tonight, which is broadcast on Wednesday from 6pm on ITV1, and will also be available to view on the broadband channel ITV Local by logging on to www.itvlocal.com/itvfixers ITV Fixers executive producer Margo Horsley said: "We want to give young people the chance to decide what they want to do, develop th eir own projects and give them a little bit of help if needed.

"I've seen how energetic and committed they are when what they're doing means something to them. What we're seeing has really made me question whether young people deserve such a bad press."

What is the betting that when these people get their 'FREE' houses they will be claiming benefits???? actually I probably imagine they already are.

I almost guarantee it, it annoys me as when I was there age, say 22 I had 2 sons in private school that I had to pay the fees for, the rent, bills etc and I did not expect anyone to pay it for me.

10 years ago when I was 22 young people had jobs and paid bills as no-one seemed to be on disability etc.

I do wonder if LAZYITUS is now classed as a medical problem as that is what most people on benefits and disbility seem to be suffering from.

Firefly,
There is an old saying that goes "better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".

You would be well advised to learn this.
These kids are making an effort and should be applauded. No doubt you are also one of these people who don't want well paid jobs in Andover and hate Tesco for trying to provide some.

Effort????? why should they be applauded as if they were makig the effort to get jobs as firefly says then that would be worth applauding.

Come to think of it why should be even be applauded for getting a job as that is what people have to do to pay bills, what sort of work ethic have these kids been brought up with I ask???.

Tesco........ah that reminds me I have to go shopping later.

That's with MY hard earned money that I earned!!! I would have more to spend if my money was not going to pay benefits for people who are more fit and healthy than I am to spend on their booze and fags.

By the way you have just done what you accused me of and been a hypocrite on top so maybe you should take your own advice before you start lecturing others.

Maybe I will give benefits a call and ask if they will pay my sons private school fees as they seem to give money away to people who do not need it.

When did I say hypocrite. My comment stands. As someone who grew up in an area where people expected the state to pay for them, and is now a senior accountant for a large company ( and paying tax to help the less fortunate), I applaud them.

maybe one day you will understand what it's like at the bottom and appreciate people trying to make a better life. But I doubt it.

Firefly you are bang out of order times have change due cut backs and closures of shops & big companies cutting back on staff? yes ten years ago things were quite different then and you forget we have had over 10 yrs of a Labour Government. word of warning you do not judge people like you do because as you are not medically trained i.e a doctor so back off?

I have to agree with Firefly. These people have the mentality that the state owes them a living. There is a severe lack of work ethic in todays younger generation. I blame the government too for making it too easy for people to sit at home watching Trisha all day instead of doing 9-5 or whatever hours it takes to make a living like the rest of us. Unfortunately it seems to be a viscious circle in certain areas of town - if the kids grow up with parents sponging off the social while still affording all the extras in life - beer, fags, white trainers, mobile phones, sky tv and junk food - then they are bound to follow suit.

I have read the comments and I am disappointed that in this day an age there is so much bigotry around. Having been homeless 27yrs ago at the age of 19, I feel fairly well qualified to comment on this topic. I became homeless through no fault of my own but with help and support over many years I am now a valuable member of society. I work and yes pay taxes, I own my own home, but I never take for granted what I have as it could happen to anyone of us, no matter what background we are from. I have seen many well educated privately schooled people on the streets as well as people who have not had the same opportunities as this. These people should be applauded for being brave enough to talk about what happened to them in order to maybe help someone. Good luck to them.

Well well well. If it isnt Firefly talking complete carp again. I would love to see you in there situation, you would probably go running to daddy for some money. Good on them, shame on you. I have been reading your rubbish for a long time now. Do us all a favour & button it. YOU ARE NOT STEVE WILKOS!

Topaz,
at the risk of sounding patronising, well done. You are the proof that helping those who need it is the best thing to do.

A few years ago in Switzerland they used to sterilise their undesirables and chavs to stop the continuity. Maybe we should try that here. This would protect the honest tax payers no end

well it would seem that firefly & some of you have forgotten that most of those who are on the dole lost their jobs through no cause of their own but their employers forced to lay them off due to cut backs or closure. so firefly if the shoe was on the other foot would you be ranting on about it???
as there is worse to come as per mr darling's quoted?

I think Firefly is right about the youth of today and their 'I am too good to work so i'll claim benefits' attitude.

So if you get laid off as the firm goes bust you go and get another job straight away.

Simple as!!!
