Staff at the Andover-based charity The Macular Disease Society (MDS) have their fingers crossed for tomorrow - hoping they will win a prize from the National Lottery Fund.

The charity is in line for a top prize from the fund, having reached the finals of the National Lottery Awards.

The Macular disease society has devised a scheme to help people with sight loss to read again.

Macular disease causes people to lose their central vision but the society's Train the Trainer scheme teaches people with the condition to use their remaining peripheral vision to the best effect.

They then train other people in their local area.

The National Lottery has helped to fund the three year project which will eventually train nearly 300 volunteers around the UK.

Now the project has been nominated for an award by the lottery itself.

The chief executive of the Macular Disease Society, Tom Bremridge said: "We are delighted to be in the finals of the National Lottery Awards.

"Train the Trainer is a unique project which brings joy and independence to many people who thought they would never read again."
