Davies treble sets up Whitchurch blitz

2:32pm Wednesday 27th August 2008

Whitchurch's impressive home form continued on Monday night when a second half blitz devastated Petersfield Town who had themselves put seven on Downton a week earlier.

The nap hand did not seem on the cards after an even first half but once the away defence gifted Ian Davies a simple tap-in just the hour mark, the rot set in. Good work by Paul Coventry set up Davies for the second and two minutes later he found room on the right to crash a shot past Lloyd Patilla for his hat-trick. A rasping drive from John Rimmer was deflected in for the fourth and with the defence shot to pieces Pa Touray rampaged through to drill home the fifth to put Whitchurch United joint third in the table after six games.

Last Saturday due to traffic problems, Whitchurch only arrived at Ringwood 20 minutes before kick-off and with no adequate warm-up soon found themselves 2-0 down on their way to a 3-1 defeat.

Boss Brian Drury said: "It was a disastrous day for us as the A31 was closed and we ended up going through places I had never heard of to get to the ground. "We never really got going early on and ended up losing to a side we should not have."

After the break against the run of play the home side added a third goal, before Ian Davies pulled one back for the visitors.

Last Wednesday, the first local derby of the season saw Whitchurch beat Tadley Calleva 2-1.

Paul George got the opening goal before the break with Paul Coventry adding a second to put Whitchurch in command.

The visitors' Tyrone Aldridge had a one-on-one saved by Craig Atkinson, before Richard Willcock scored right near the end.
