IT has been a bountiful harvest for Andover Food Bank, thanks to residents’ generosity.

More than nine tons of food was donated by 54 schools, 38 churches and four other groups.

The harvest collection was up by 13 per cent on the previous year and the food has already been sorted, ready to help families in crisis across Test Valley.

Annie Mihell said: “This showed extraordinary generosity in spite of the financial pressures being faced by many in the local community.”

Schools that got involved included St John the Baptist RC Primary School, which donated almost 250kg, The Avenue Nursery, in Penton Mewsey, which collected produce for the first time, and Shipton Bellinger Primary School, which gave 154kg.

At Farleigh School a house competition helped to encourage a massive donation of 860kg, while Year 11 pupils at Rookwood School – who have supported the Andover Food Bank since they were first introduced to its work in Year 7 – gave 254kg.
