EVERY November, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world – and Andover is no exception.

The aim is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health – specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Each participant must begin on 1 November with a clean-shaven face.

For the entire month each participant must grow and groom a moustache.

There can be no joining of the mo to the sideburns (that’s considered a beard), and no joining of the handlebars to the chin (that’s considered a goatee).

With the Andover Advertiser’s Joe Faretra taking part in the monthlong facial hair marathon, the paper wanted to see who else was putting their lip on the line in the name of charity and asked people to send in their pictures. We also visited some of the men in the area doing their bit.

Three amigos from Andover Post Office, Tom Young, Pete Cadman and Richard Mattock, jointly raised nearly £1,500 to add to national figures raised by postmen.

Tom said: “I want to thank everyone, not just the customers, but also the businesses that have kindly donated.”

Participant Dave Phillips says that this is the second year he’s taking part and it’s a good way to raise funds and awareness for cancer.

Dez Austin said: “Ordinarily, I have an aversion to facial hair, yet grew a moustache for Movember.

“My dad died of cancer 20 years ago so it was a tribute to him.”

Steve Stubbs from Andover said: “I’m supporting Movember this year to raise money and awareness for men’s health in memory of Bill Horne, who sadly passed away in December 2011 of prostate cancer.”
