Lead thieves at work in Highlands Road

POLICE are appealing for public help after lead thieves were discovered at work at a house in Andover’s Highlands Road.

The incident took place just after 9.30pm on Saturday (15). The victim disturbed two offenders in the alley at the side of his house who were in the process of trying to steal lead strips from the roof. They then fled the scene.

Once they had gone the victim discovered several feet of lead strip had been taken. The offenders are described as two white males, one wearing a red coat and one wearing a dark top.

PC Paddy Coveney, said: “I would like to hear from anyone with information that could help identify the offenders or lead to the recovery of the lead. “Enquiries so far indicate that the two offenders may have been in the area from as early as 6pm that evening. “Whilst the area was not particularly busy, we know that a number of people walk dogs and run nearby and it is possible they may have seen something. “I would urge anyone with any information or anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area during the evening of 15 December to come forward and speak to us.”

Anyone with any information should contact police at PC Coveney at Andover police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers, the charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Or given that Highlands Road is only a few minutes walk from the Police Station (if it is open and the publicly funded staff are not sat hiding inside) a Police officer could walk up the road to keep an eye on things. This would even give a pointless cso something useful to do. I know dealing with crime head on is not how things are done in andover BUT just for once if they came out of the station (or their cars) and did some real policing instead of looking for easy pickings to justify their ill deserved salary, maybe crime stats would actually improve?

RH, you are having yet another "pop" at the police.

One moment you accuse them all of being corrupt and in your next breath you want more of them pounding the beat catching lead thieves.

Time to make up your mind as to exact what it is you want.

Due to this Governments cuts to the police force budgets, they have limited resources/money and they can only do a certain amount. Hampshire is one of the country's largest county's for the limited number of police to cover.

If you want to lay blame, direct your anger at the Conservative/LibDem Government for they are the ones who are heavily cutting the police force, which obviously means less police officers in the Andover area.

The police officers I have met are honest and work hard for their money. I just wish there were more of them.

No i cant blame a governement I can only sympathise with the horrors they inherited. You must have met the rare police man if you have found one "honest and hard working" I would doubt the hard working comment as the crime stats locally prove. Honesty is another matter and fact like hilsborough, pleb and g 20 (and my own experience) demonstrate that the vast majority of HMs finest are corrupt to a certain degree. So nothing to make my mind up on. You are about the only one I know that knows a hardworking policeman in Andover and facts have gone to prove the vast majority cannot be trusted. 2 totally separate issues which need to be addressed not by more money but by removing the malignant attitude across all the ranks.

RH, your comments are illogical and incorrect.

1) The "vast" majority of the police force are not corrupt as you imply. That is pure sensationalism by you.

2) The incidents you have highlighted and which have hit the media headlines over the past 23 years - such as Hillsborough (in 1989), G20 (in 2000) and "Pleb" (this year) are three incidents from hundreds upon thousands that are dealt with EVERY YEAR by the police force.

3) Crime stats for Andover can't be blamed on the Police. They are not the ones committing the crimes. It's the people of Andover who are committing these crimes to create the high level of crime statistics we see today.

4) Malignant Attitude across all the ranks? All? Again, this is just sensationalism by yourself.

5) If you want more Police presence in Andover to reduce crime, do not think for one minute it can be done with the reduced and current level of officers. If you think it can be, you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

6) More police presence means more money for the police budgets. You won't get this under the Tories/LibDems.

You have a major chip on your shoulder with regards to the Police. Get over it. You whinging all the time and criticising the police on here isn't going to change a **** thing neither now or in the future.
