Village shop has to close as wall falls

PENTON village shop has been forced to temporarily close after one of its walls collapsed, making it unsafe for shoppers.

The wall fell in the early hours of Sunday, 3 February leaving a big hole in the side of the building, however the internal walls, stock and furniture were not damaged.

The White Hart pub in Penton owns the building in which the shop is situated and are already working towards repairing the damage.

Left-over stock was taken by the pub and sold to customers.

Shop manager Catherine Robin said: “What we think has happened is with the cold weather and snow that we have had recently, all the water has gone into the wall and caused it to crumble.

“During the difficult weather our trade has been fantastic and having a local shop was a big advantage to the village.”

Test Valley Borough Councillor Ian Robin, who helped set up the shop, said: “We would like to thank everyone in Penton, we really appreciate their help in getting the shop open and running it, we hope it won’t be too long until we are up and running again, so watch this space.”
