Boris Johnson in Eastleigh for Conservative by-election campaign

Boris in town for Tories Boris in town for Tories

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has declared the Eastleigh by-election a “two horse race”.

The Tory heavyweight was in the constituency this afternoon canvassing votes alongside the party's candidate, Maria Hutchings.

The popular politician posed for pictures with surprised residents as he knocked on doors in Stamford Way, Fair Oak.

His visit was briefly interrupted by a UKIP van, after a campaigner drove the vehicle down neighbouring Dean Road and began sounding the horn.

But Mr Johnson remained in positive spirits, even after talking to one man who told the Conservative duo he would not be voting next week because: “I hate all politicians”.

Mr Johnson played down accusations that he was visiting the town because his party had got “the jitters”, having seen the amount of resources the Liberal Democrats had pumped into the campaign.

He said: “I'm here because it's very important to support our party at a time when I think it's amazing how close and how hard fought this election is.

“It's a two horse race between Maria and the Liberal Democrats and it's perfectly obvious to me that we've got a very, very strong, sparky, original, forthright, local candidate campaigning on local issues who I think has a very, very good chance next Thursday.

“It would be stupendous if we do win. It would be an absolutely wonderful thing because it would be the first time in 31 years that a governing party would have won a by-election in these circumstances.

“Clearly it's going to be very tough and tight and there's plenty of evidence of that from the conversations we've been having.

“But I can tell you there's a lot of support here.”

Sounds like a good idea the whole thing has become not only a joke but a bloody nuisance you can't go into town without getting accosted by someone and the amount of junk mail has gone through the roof and it all goes straight in the bin, i have already voted and i think everybody else knows who they are going to vote for so all parties are now p***ing against the wind, roll on the 28th.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Boris Johnson is the Mayor of London and NOT a Member of Parliament. The Tories must be desperate if they have to bring in the bumbling buffoon who can have no influence on what happens in the House of Commons!

No one would be more successful in persuading me NOT to vote Conservative than Bumbling Boris. If they elect him as their next leader, after Cameron has lost the 2015 election, the Tories will be out of power for a generation.

Considering big beast of CONservative Party Boris Johnson and their candidate in Eastleigh hold completely opposite views on various issues, they may not empty the Asda’s egg shelves by throwing the contents at each other, BUT surely voters can work out that both are hypocrites pretending to be nice about each other but in fact given the chance will stab.

Let us hope Asda will keep them away from kitchen knives. Otherwise the store may end up becoming a scene of serious crime.

Likes Boris, makes me smile. Really enjoying the by-election at the moment(don't live, work or shop in Eastleigh). Those candidates are truly hilarious and the party stalwarts not far behind. Anybody else enjoy Nick Clegg on the box last night?

Hm 'two horse race' is usually the liberals slogan so no points to Boris for originality. It seems none of the candidates has anything to say other than through their minders and everybody is up to their armpits in paper. What a farce!

Got doorstepped by a LibDem canvasser last night, seriously nice chap - explained to him that Huhne got my vote in the GE but I wouldn't be voting LibDem this time, nothing to do with Huhne being a bit naughty with his speeding points (after all we'd all do it or have done it, be honest!) but everything to do with the LibDems entering into a "coalition" with the antichrist leading to more meddling in other countries' business (ie Libya, Chad, Mali etc) and the fact that we're being COLONISED by Eastern Europe's otherwise unemployable dross, and only UKIP seem to be concerned about it - so that's where my vote is going this time.
LIke I said, he was a nice enough bloke and he said he's getting a bit bored now of hearing the SAME things I said at every lower-middle/upper-w
orking class door he knocks on. On the subject of the New World Order puppet Clegg entering into a "coalition" with the CONservatives, he used the phrase "monumental miscalculation", which sums it up pretty well IMO!

Why don,t you go back to your own country with a name like yours.

Why not let us keep the likes of paramjit and just get rid of all the w*****s like yourself? Sounds like a far better idea to me.
While appreciating and thankful to guys who are considerate members of the human race, I beg you to maintain your dignity and resist lowering yourself to the level of somebody with mindset like netley020.

I have lived most of my life in Southampton which will remain my home.

Yes there are some very strange creatures everywhere, including in India where I was born.

As even India is supposed to be overpopulated I wonder where likes of this person would want to send whoever they do not approve for reasons of their own?

Or is this person considering to pay my fare on Richard Branson's shuttle to space?.....

Seriously it is mainly because such people lack intelligence to understand actual issues let alone ability to think solutions, all they can do is to borrow simplistic slogans. Yes borrow because they can't even think on their own!

They want to throw some people out today and Hitlarian methods could be next.

Because people will not vote for policies like that, these people will remain isolated Nutters.

My brother and two cousins sacrificed their lives because they did not want world to be bullied by monsters likebHitler, so with same blood I am not ever going to feel threatened by very tiny minority of low lifers brainless wonders in the UK.

Vast majority of British people are decent people, they have got nothing but contempt for such creatures.

That is why I will live and die in Britain, and after my death my body will be donated to medical students, hopefully in Southampton. Most sincerely hope it won't be used as substitute for horse meat to feed some fascist.

Sorry I lack teaching skills.

An Indian friend of mine used to teach English in UK but he got fed up with people like this one (when NF used to be main voice of fascism in UK) so he moved to teach away from Europe.

Whatever my views of Cameron, even he is trying to create better relations with India, sadly while there he is having to answer to many about behaviour of person like this one in UK, because Indian hacks find it easy to get moronic garbage out of minority for stirring anti British sentiments than writing views of majority in our country.

This kind of mentality is hurting British image abroad. I am not worried about what anybody says about me but am concerned how such people's views may hurt our nation's interests.

Just seen in iPad edition of Guardian (20 Feb) Prime Minister of UK is quoted having said in India:

"“Punjabis make an extraordinary contribution to British life and I’m delighted to have the chance to visit the land of their ancestors...."

But likes of NetleyO20 want to undermine him by saying on Echo's site that I should be sent back to same Punjab where Cameron is trying to build bridges required to rebuild UK's economy.

Considering India is now 5th or 6th big investor in Britain, xenophobic views by certain unsavoury members of political class and tiny minority of fascists (Who most certainly are extremely hated by over whelming majority of Brits) could easily deter some of those investors.

UKIP for me too. The only party that has pledged to control Eastern European immigration.

The Lib/Lab/Con party are lying to us again, telling us there won't be more than a few thousand migrants, whereas on past experience it could be millions!
If they have sensible estimates the government are not going to tell us, so it has to be time to give UKIP an opportunity to bring in change.

Says a lot for our so called democracy when it seems like whoever throws the most money into their campaign are likely to be the winners. In our last local council elections the Lib/Dems kept saying that our ward was a two horse race with them and the Cons (that's Conservatives not convicts or con artists).Lo and behold Labour won.So come on everyone in Eastleigh make a big effort to upset the big boys and get your X on UKIP.
