Les rides in with £2,000 for charity
11:00am Thursday 26th September 2013 in News
WHITCHURCH resident Les Jordan has successfully completed his cycle ride from Land’s End to John o’Groats on a 30-year-old Raleigh bike, raising more than £2,000 for Breathtakers.
Despite his support vehicle breaking down, Les was able to complete the ride in 13 days, one more than he had aimed for.
Les said: “It was just the most amazing experience and I am so happy that I took on this challenge.
“Seeing the Scottish Highlands and crossing the Forth Bridge on a bike was incredible.”
The problems with his support vehiclemeant that Les hadto tough it out sleeping in numerous different and peculiar locations.
He said: “I slept on benches and under trees in thermal gloves and a beanie hat but I was so tired that I didn’t really have a bad night’s sleep!
“One night I slept in a church porch and was woken the next morning by the church warden opening up for Sunday service!
“They took me in and fed me chocolate digestives and gave me coffee. I was met with such kindness and generosity along the way.”
Lynne Thompson, of the charity, said: “Not only has Les completed this great personal achievement but he has also raised funds for children with Obliterative Bronchiolitis (OB), a rare lung disease, on the way.
“Breathtakers OB Trust hosted a welcome back reception for Les last week and among the guests there to welcome and congratulate Les were the Mayor and Mayoress of Whitchurch, Cllr John Clark and Rosemary Crumplin.”
Les is hoping that his fundraising figure will continue to rise.
