PLANS to build housing on half a square mile of land south of the A303 near Andover could lead to a £10m windfall to boost educational opportunities in the town and establish world-class facilities here.

Andover College could be in line for the investment under plans to sell a land asset it owns to developers.

The college owns a partshare in the value of more than 321 acres of land in Andover near the A303 and Monxton Road Barracks, in an area known as Littlebridge.

The area could accommodate more than 1,500 new homes as well as homes for returning soldiers, a primary school, community facilities and a new country park.

Test Valley Borough Council is currently consulting on its new draft Revised Local Plan, which sets out how the borough will grow over the next 18 years.

If the land in which the college has a stake is included in the Local Plan, that share would be sold and the proceeds used to fund a major expansion at the college in Andover.

The land is not currently included in the local plan, meaning permission for new homes on the site cannot be guaranteed.
