AN Andover woman will hike along the Great Wall of China in memory of her sister for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Donna Newsum, who lives in Ashfield Road, lost her younger sister Kim White, aged 40, to cancer on Tuesday, 6 November 2012.

Kim left behind her childhood sweetheart husband and her daughters aged 11 and 13 along with many broken hearts of family and friends who loved her.

At the age of 31, Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Following a mastectomy and rigorous treatment, she herself took part in the challenge of hiking along The Great Wall of China raising thousands of pounds for charity. As her health improved and whilst in a period of remission, she took part in marathons and half marathons, all the while raising money to find a cure for cancer.

Donna is now looking to walk in her sister’s footsteps along The Great Wall of China in April.

Donna said: “She took the news with such strength, dignity and courage.

“There was always a 'plan b', and her wish for us to stay positive and life continue as normal for her girls was paramount.

“In December 2011, she asked if we could all spend our Christmas together at Disneyland, Paris, a place that held many special memories for Kim.

“Despite her illness and clearly in pain, she never once complained and took any opportunity to laugh at herself.

“With the loss of her hair through chemo she became known as 'Bald Eagle', and as the eldest sister, Kim took great delight in returning the favour and I became ‘The Old Crow’.

“In April 2012, she took part in the London Marathon.

“A feat it has to be said for any of us, but even more so, a woman fighting cancer.

“It was an incredibly emotional day and I could never have been more proud of my little sister as I was on that day.

“She had ticked off another ‘thing to do’ on her bucket list, and she had smashed it.

“Kim’s strength, courage, dignity and amazing sense of humour, were qualities that stayed with her until her very last days.

“I am blessed and honoured to have had such a wonderful little sister and I will miss my ‘Bald Eagle’ every single day for the rest of my life.”
