A GROUP of The Clere School’s Year 10 French, German and Spanish students have walked away as prize winners after competing in the Modern Foreign Languages Challenge in Basingstoke.

For the second year running the school won the French competition.

Carol Johnston from The Basingstoke Consortium organises the Modern Foreign Language (MFL) Challenge each year.

The event is open to all borough secondary schools and Year 10 students complete a number of business-related tasks in French, German or Spanish. This year the children worked in teams to prepare a press release, radio advertisement, brochure and presentation in their chosen language.

The purpose of the day is to raise the profile of language study, promote the value of Modern Foreign Languages in a business context and prove to students that using languages can be fun.

Dawn German, curriculum leader, MFL, said: “We are extremely proud of all the students who took part.

“They represented the school extremely well and did an excellent job of showcasing their language skills.

“Having language skills today is hugely important in an increasingly global business environment.”
