YEAR 5 and 6 children from Appleshaw St Peter’s Primary School’s netball team beat opponents from larger rural and town schools to win the Level 2 Andover Rural Netball Tournament held at John Hanson.

The successful team won every match in the tournament, which was sponsored by Andover Arrows, on their way to collecting the trophy.

The pupils have now been entered into the play-off day to be held at Norman Court School on Friday, 23 May.

This is an opportunity for each winning team from Andover, Romsey and the rest of the Test Valley to compete against each other.

It was a double celebration as the tournament marked the end of a perfect season.

Fourteen children have played as part of the team at some point during the season.

Laura Crompton, team coach, said: “We won every match – excellent shooting has meant we have scored at least 10 goals per game.

“Superb defending has meant that we have conceded very few goals.

“Most games have been played at other schools.

“Most of the children have chosen to participate in netball club at school since they were in Year 3.

“We are looking forward to coaching the Year 5s again next year and introducing younger players into the squad.”

Sarah Dabill, deputy head teacher, said: “The one thing I am most proud of is that we are a small school that has competed so well against larger schools. It’s a real achievement for us and we are very proud.

“Also the fact is they have strived to improve their performance.”
