ANDOVER and District Mencap hosted a 50th anniversary celebration football match at New Street Football Club on Saturday, 24 May.
A number of members of Andover’s Mencap branch took on Southampton Football Club’s disability team.
At the full-time whistle it was the Southampton side that came out on top in a tight but entertaining encounter, winning 11-7.
Honorary vice-president Elizabeth Hall said: “It was a splendid match, well supported by both Southampton and Andover supporters.
“The Southampton team were very experienced and won but it was a fantastic game, played in good spirit by both sides.
“Each player received medals and congratulations, and feedback from the players was excellent.
“Thanks must be given to New Street Football Club and their members for providing a great venue and so much support through Martin Tobin and others who managed the Andover team.
“This event has cemented the fact that despite their disability anyone can come together as a team and enjoy a fantastic sport and feel a real sense of achievement and pride.”
