CHILDREN from Vigo Infant School were under starters’ orders supporting their teachers in the Race for Life on a blustery afternoon.

Parents packed into the school’s field to cheer on the children for the event which saw 208 pupils taking part in a sponsored run three times around the field to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The pupils were supporting 11 members of staff who took part in the Race for Life on Sunday in Winchester.

The school also held a cake sale to add to the funds bringing the day’s total well over £600 and counting with a lot of sponsorship money still to come.

Headteacher, Anne Perriam, said: “I’m really proud of the school and the parents and community on the whole.

“They have accepted that we will run in this weather regardless because if you have cancer you cannot choose and they have accepted that it’s about taking part.

“We have a member of staff here that has cancer.”

Children had a name on their shirts of a person they were doing the run for with a number of them doing it for the member of staff battling the illness.

They also received medals for their efforts.
