UPPER and lower sixth textile students at Peter Symonds College have been involved in the design and creation of a textile memorial patchwork cover.

It features more than 100 25cm squares which, once sewn together, will create a unique cover for the new memorial stone sculpture to be unveiled at noon on Monday, 23 June, at The Great Hall, Winchester.

The sculpture, ‘To Honour a Promise’, has been commissioned from Simon Smith by Hampshire County Council. It is to commemorate the many soldiers who passed through the Morn Hill camp during the First World War on their journey to and from Southampton.

“The textile and art department has been working on this project for several weeks now,” said textiles teacher Beki Vaile.

“Students and staff alike have produced themed squares which will create a unique cover to conceal the sculpture before its official unveiling.”

County councillor Jackie Porter said: “It seemed fitting that Hampshire teenagers of a similar age to those who went off to The Great War were involved in this collaborative community event to honour a promise made in 1919.

“This event should help us all to remember those who gave their lives in the Great War to ensure our freedom.”

After the unveiling, the students’ cover will go on display in The Great Hall over the summer.
