ELDERLY residents at an Andover care home were left stranded last weekend because the lifts were again out of action.

Lion Oak Court, in Weyhill Road, has had problems with its two lifts before.

This time both lifts were out of order, leaving some residents stuck in their rooms.

One lift has been out of order since 19 June, and last Saturday the other shaft developed a fault leading to limited access until the lifts were fixed on Monday.

Tina Harris, whose 75-year-old father lives at Lion Oak Court, said: “This is now the fourth time these lifts have broken down and it isn’t good enough.

“We had to carry my father up and down the stairs over the weekend and it isn’t right. It’s about their dignity.

“It is harder on the carers as well who have had to carry the residents around, and for some residents the lifts are the only way for them to get down from their rooms. It’s not right.”

An Aster Group spokesman said: “We’ve been working closely with our customers at Lion Oak Court regarding problems they’ve been experiencing with the building’s two lifts.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience this has caused our customers and have done everything we can to get both lifts working again as quickly as possible.

“One of the building’s lifts developed a fault and was out of action between 19-30 June. As soon as the problem was reported, we organised for engineers to attend and examine the lift. New parts had to be ordered to fix it and the repairs were completed on Monday.

“On Saturday, unfortunately the building’s second lift also broke down. Again, we sent engineers straight to the site but they were unable to solve the problem immediately.

“When the engineers returned to the site on Monday, they were able to complete the necessary repairs.”
