SOLDIERS based at Tidworth’s Perham Down Swinton Barracks have been raising the roof in Goodworth Clatford this week.

The regiment, from 52 armoured engineer squadron, of 22 Engineers, is already freemen of the Borough of Test Valley and members of the unit are keen to do work in the community.

Lieutenant Sophie Leonard, said: “We were asked to look at the Scout hall to see if there was anything we could do to help.

“On investigation we found the roof was the biggest problem area with water ingress and there was a need for new roof trusses to replace the wooden ones which were rotten.”

The building was last repaired around 30 years ago although there has been a scout hut on the site for around 60 years.

The soldiers’ have their work cut out with this project and 10 will be in working here for about four weeks.

Lt Leonard added: “This forms part of their training in preparation for their work in Kenya.”

The soldiers will be using their construction skills on new buildings in the African country.

Jeff Linnecar, of 4th Andover Scouts, said: “The work will ensure that the life of this building is extended so that it can continue to be used by Scouts, cubs, beavers and guides from many villages as well as Andover.

“I would like to thank everybody who has been involved in the project, particularly 22 Engineers and Test Valley Borough Council, which helped us with a £4,000 community fund grant.”

When the work is finished the group is planning to hold a ‘raise the roof’ party as a thank-you to everyone involved.
