JAPANESE animation will come to Andover for a film club’s latest showing.

Andover Film Club’s first presentation of its new season is The Wind Rises – an animated Japanese historical drama.

It will be shown at the Odeon on Monday, 8 September.

Released in 2013, this is the final film by director Hayao Miyazaki.

In a career that has spanned six decades, Miyazaki has gained international acclaim as a maker of movies in the Japanese anime style, featuring stunning visual effects.

His work addresses serious and often controversial themes and The Wind Rises is no exception.

It tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi, designer of the Mitsubishi Zero fighter aircraft which served in the Second World War. Such subjects touch a raw nerve in Japan and the film has drawn criticism there from across the political spectrum.

The show is open to the public as well as club members and will start at 8pm. Advance booking is advised via andoverfilmclub.org.
