AN Andover baker is hoping to get across the United States of America in 30 days for charity – using his thumb.

Steve Burbidge, owner of Burbidges Bakery in Weyhill Road, will be setting off on his mission on 17 September when he will hitchhike across the country to raise money for the Rotary Club’s Shelter Box appeal.

The distance of about 4,000 miles will see Steve covering on average of 130 miles per day to achieve his coast to coast goal.

The fundraising for the journey currently stands at more than £2,500, but Steve hopes to get nearer to the £6,000 mark, which would be the equivalent to ten boxes.

ShelterBox aid is tailored to a disaster and includes a disaster relief tent for a family, thermal blankets and groundsheets, water storage and purification equipment, solar lamps, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, mosquito nets and a children’s activity pack.

“It’s a green plastic box with all the things needed in a disaster for a family to survive for about three months,” said Steve.

“Each box costs around £590. I have already had a box donated to me by Jon Stannah.

“I’m looking to other town businesses to support me with the cost of a box or put in an amount.

“I’m looking forward to doing it because it’s a challenge.

“I just have to be totally and utterly positive.

“The good thing about hitchhiking is that you have to use your senses.”
