AN 81-old-man was left shaken and injured after being mugged in an Andover street by a gang of three youths on Tuesday.

Police are asking people who may have been in the Adelaide Road area of Andover on the evening of Tuesday, 23 September to contact them.

The man was walking along Adelaide Road at its junction with Vigo Road, next to Vigo Road Recreation Ground at about 8pm, when the incident happened – it was completely unprovoked.

A group of up to three youths approached the man, who had been to a local shop.

They searched his bags and stole his wallet, which contained cash and cards.

The man was knocked to the ground and suffered injuries to his hand, including a broken finger, and head. He was taken to the Royal County Hospital in Winchester for treatment.

PC Lisa Cooper said: “This was a nasty incident where an elderly man was targeted by a group of young men or boys.

“Although he didn’t sustain any serious injuries, he has been left very shaken by the incident.

“Were you in the area at the time? Did you see or hear any groups of youths hanging around in the area?”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC Cooper at Basingstoke Police Station on 101 or call the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously.
