ANTON Junior School children have been helping to keep the roads around their buildings safe by carrying out speed checks.

On Friday, 12 September police community support officers Alex Carter and Chloe Dunmall from Hampshire Constabulary, along with special inspector Bob Cooke and special constable Laura Dunford, paid a visit to the school to carry out a speed check in the school’s vicinity.

The visit was designed to raise public awareness about the importance of maintaining a safe speed, especially around local schools.

Following a brief demonstration by the officers 16 members of the school council donned reflective jackets and attempted to catch speeding motorists on Barlows Lane, outside the school’s front gates.

One unnamed driver was flagged down and given a verbal warning to slow down.

Happily, however, all other motorists in the area at the time seemed to be adhering to the 30mph speed limit.

One pupil, Lily Parry, said: “It was exciting because we got to hold the speed camera and we caught one person.”
