THE 2nd Andover Sea Scouts have taken to the water as part of a world record sailing attempt.

The Sea Scouts were taking part in Bart’s Bash which is a worldwide event in memory of the late Olympic sailor Andrew “Bart” Simpson.

The event was master-minded by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, which was set up last year after Andrew’s tragic death during his training for the America’s Cup.

Those behind Bart’s Bash aimed to get as many boats racing in one day as possible.

Andover’s Sea Scouts were just one of thousands of groups who took part across the world and their chairman, Alexis Hammer, was happy they took part.

He said:“We took part in the event as part of Calshot Sailing Club where we sail every week.

“It was a great event for the kids to be a part of and hopefully we’ve done our bit to help break the record.”

The Sea Scouts also took the opportunity to raise some money of their own by sailing a dingy continuously for six hours.

Mr Hammer said: “We managed to raise £400 or £500 which will help us with maintenance.

“Sailing is an expensive sport, so it is nice to have this money to put towards the cost.”
