AN Andover community group has been given a welcome boost to its services.

The King Arthur’s over 50s group has been handed a near-£500 jackpot by council bosses.

The cash has been awarded to the group from Test Valley Borough Council’s community ward budget and will help pay for the group’s programme of activities.

Conservative councillor for the Alamein ward, Janet Whiteley, presented the cheque for £489 to the group’s co-founders John Cockaday and Iris Andersen.

Iris said: “I was very pleased to receive this money as it helps the people to be able to go out on trips, which we have done and will continue to do.

“The money will be helpful in keeping us going, because we started with nothing and this was self-funded.”

The sessions regularly see around 20 people attending to take part in activities including talks, trips and monthly visits from Goldies Sing and Smile UK.

The group, which started in May 2013, meets once a fortnight at King Arthur’s Hall, in King Arthur’s Way, and is open to anyone over the age of 50.
