PUPILS and staff at a Red Rice school have come together to create a unique tribute to the Battle of the Somme.
The commemorative art project went on display at the front of Farleigh School as part of the First World War centenary events.
A total of 20,000 wooden spatulas, personalised by children and teachers were planted in the ground – one to represent each of the brave servicemen who lost their lives in the battle.
The striking tribute formed part of a packed remembrance week at the school, which also featured an event called ‘World War One Remembered’ – an evening of readings and music commemorating the war.
Father Simon Everson, headmaster at Farleigh School, said: “The way in which the children have embraced the First World War centenary has been remarkable.
“The 20,000 project brought a depth of understanding about the realities of war, which was particularly moving and I am very proud of them all.”
