A teenage pedestrian has died following a New Year's Day crash on a major Hampshire road.

Police have launched an investigation after a Skoda Octavia taxi collided with the man on the A30 Winchester Road, near the junction with Down Grange Farm, just after half past midnight on the morning of Thursday January 1.

The pedestrian, who police say was in his late teens, suffered serious injuries in the incident and was rushed to hospital.

But despite the efforts of paramedics, the man was pronounced dead later that day. His family have been informed.

The taxi driver, a man aged in his 30s who is also from Basingstoke, was shaken but not seriously injured in the crash.

Officers have thanked members of the public who assisted with their initial enquiries at the scene of the fatal crash, but are now appealing for any further witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw the collision, or other motorists who saw a pedestrian walking along the A30 road between midnight and half past midnight in the early hours of Thursday.

Anyone with information should contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Eastleigh police station by calling 101, quoting Operation Cyane.

Information can also be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
