PLANS to cut the speed limit between Andover and Enham Alamein have moved a step closer this week, with highways officers considering a new pedestrian crossing on Newbury Road linking Roman Way and King Arthur’s Way.

The Advertiser reported last month that campaigners had been calling for lower limits on Newbury Road to make school runs safer and to reduce noise and air pollution.

Their cause has been advanced this week after county council officials agreed to review the limit, which currently varies between 30mph and 60mph.

Alamein Liberal Democrats have proposed a flat restriction of 30mph from Enham Arch to Smannell Road and 40mph between Smannell Road and Enham Alamein.

Len Gates, vice chairman of the North West Hants Liberal Democrats, said: “Increased development north of Enham Arch has changed the nature of the area and roads.

“There has been a very big increase in car and pedestrian traffic, and the current speed limits are not appropriate for a residential area.

“We are pleased to see the council has agreed and are grateful for Cllr Tim Rolt’s support on this.”

Cllr Rolt, the Ukip county member representing Andover North, said: “I am happy to support this campaign.

“The speed limit situation on the A343 from Andover to Enham Alamein can be quite confusing and 40mph for all of the stretch involved would be much simpler and safer for everyone.”

Mr Gates also said highways officers were investigating plans to install a pedestrian crossing linking Roman Way and King Arthur’s Way, though there is no timescale for this.
