DAVIE WEIR today urged his Rangers team-mates to crank up the pressure on league leaders Celtic by going top of the SPL.

Walter Smith's men can move into pole position in the title race for the first time since November if they beat Kilmarnock at Ibrox tomorrow.

Celtic, who hold a slender two-point lead, face Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday, and Weir knows his side have the perfect opportunity to signal their championship intent.

Rangers have missed the chance to grasp previous opportunities to go top, failing to beat Aberdeen at Pittodrie and then drawing the Old Firm match last weekend.

And Weir hopes it will be third time lucky - even if it's only for a day.

He said: "We know we will go top of the league if we win tomorrow and that's a big incentive for us going into the Kilmarnock match.

"Even although it might just be for a short time it's still something that we want to do.

"There doesn't appear to be much between ourselves and Celtic this season and there is still very much everything to play for this season.

"Only time will tell if the title race goes all the way down to the wire this season - obviously we don't want it to.

"We'd like to try and get top and then open up a gap ourselves - but first and foremost we've got to get back to the top again."

Weir is also adamant Rangers' quest for all three domestic trophies won't lead them to taking their eye off the ball in the championship race.

"If you start looking too far ahead and start worrying about too many things then you could end up in trouble," he explained.

"Last season we were involved in trying to win all four trophies at one stage because of our Uefa Cup run, and this season we are still in the hunt for all three trophies.

"You just have to focus on each game as they come. Every match is difficult. Even our Scottish Cup tie with Forfar during the week wasn't an easy game.

"I don't think you ever get easy games and Kilmarnock will be coming to Ibrox hoping to make life difficult for us. But we know what is at stake and we are all looking forward to the game and hopefully taking all three points."

Meantime, Lee McCulloch could miss the Co-operative Insurance Cup Final on March 15 if, as he fears he tore a calf muscle against Forfar.

DaMarcus Beasley also picked up a nasty shin injury in that game and is out of tomorrow's match with Killie.

Rangers medical staff say the American was lucky to avoid serious injury in the incident that saw Forfar full-back Elliot Smith given a straight red card.

"Beasley has been very lucky. The fact that his foot was off the ground when he was hit saved him from a broken leg," reported the club website.

Kirk Broadfoot is also likely to miss the Killie game with a foot injury but, like Beasley, will be fit for Hamilton next weekend.
