15,000 bottles of Prosecco have been recalled after five bottles shattered in customers' wine racks.

Customers who bought the 75ml bottles are advised by the Wine Society to return the Italian sparkling wine over fears the glass could break and cause injuries.

It is believed 15,313 bottles of Prosecco have been affected- costing around £145,473.

The recall comes amid fears that there will be a Prosecco shortage this summer.

Members of the wine club were contacted by letter and email to inform about the recall.

The Food Standards Agency, which was informed of the problem by the business, issued a product recall information notice: "The Wine Society is recalling the Society's Prosecco wine because the bottles might shatter.

"If you have bought the product, do not drink it. Instead, contact member services of The Wine Society to arrange a collection and refund/credit."

The shattered Proseccos have not caused any injuries.

The affected bottles of Prosecco include lot numbers L15S051, L15S092, and L145322.
