AN ANDOVER grandfather is “disgusted” at an overgrown footpath he describes as an impassable highway.

David Butcher says the walkway on the other side of his garden fence has been in an over-run state for a couple of months.

The walkway is located on the north side of Silchester Close and is regularly used by pupils from Harrow Way Community School.

Mr Butcher said: “Children are being forced off the footpath and pushed on to the road as a way of getting to school.”

“There are stinging nettles everywhere, which doesn’t make it safe.”

The 79-year-old was inspired to contact the Advertiser after seeing a story published about an overgrown cycle path between Shaw Close and Floral Way.

His wife, Maureen, 73, said: “The nettles are the worst.

You can’t walk through without needing to cover yourself up in case you get stung.”

In the past the couple say they attempted to maintain the area of overgrowth beyond their garden.

He added: “We have also tried to help our neighbours with the stinging nettles near their fence. But you can’t expect an 80-year-old to do it.

“Why do the residents have to ask all the time for anything to be done?”

Mr Butcher also contacted the borough councillor for Harroway ward, Brian Page, for assistance in chasing the problem up with Hampshire County Council.

Cllr Page said: “I have seen the footpath and it could pose some danger to walkers.”

HCC’s executive member for culture, recreation and countryside, Cllr Andrew Gibson, said: “As part of our annual Rights of Way vegetation cutting programme, overgrown vegetation will be cleared to the rear and west side of Silchester Close. The clearance was planned for June but due to a delay in the contract starting, it will go ahead in the next four weeks.”
