POLICE are warning about bogus calls from a person claiming to be a council employee.

Officers have recently received a number of reports from Wiltshire residents about nuisance calls where the caller says they are from Wiltshire Council.

The calls appear to be genuine as the council's number is displayed on caller ID or via 1471, but when the caller is challenged they become abusive.

Detective Constable Scott Barrett, from Wiltshire Police, said: "We can confirm that these nuisance calls are not originating from Wiltshire Council.

"If you receive a call from someone saying they are from the Council and you are not sure if they are genuine then please take the caller's details, hang up and phone the Council to check. Do not give personal, bank or credit card details over the phone.

"If you feel you have been a victim of fraud please contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

He continued: "We are investigating these calls and are determined to find the source."

If you have received one of these calls or have any information, call DC Barrett on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
