AN Andover supermarket thief has been given an extended suspended sentenced after assaulting a staff member during the theft.

Fraser Charlie Williams, of no fixed address, admitted to stealing food worth £73.29 from Lidl in Andover earlier this month and assaulting a member of staff while committing the offence.

The 22-year-old was already the subject of a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, after being convicted of having possession of a kitchen knife on Charlton Road.

Following his reappearance in court last week, magistrates in Basingstoke extended Williams' sentence by eight weeks, suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to pay £150 criminal courts charges and an £80 victim surcharge.
