THIS is the dramatic moment hammer-wielding raiders brazenly attempted to rob a Waterloo Court jeweller yesterday.

As previously reported by the Advertiser, David Mellor of David Mellor & Son's jewellers bravely blocked the door to the shop as an attempted robbery was made on their luxury watch cabinet.

Now police have released an image of the two hammer-wielding raiders trying to smash the glass frontage to the shop.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident which took place just before 11am.

The two offenders approached the store on a black scooter, and tried to smash the glass storefront with lump hammers and a knife.

After being unable to break the glass they were chased off by Mr Mellor and his daughter Amy.

Both wore dark clothing, while one wore a dark-coloured motorcycle helmet and the other a white helmet.

Police believe they travelled to the London area. Nothing was taken from the store.

Detective Constable Jonathan Swift, of Northern CID, said: “This was a brazen daylight robbery attempt.

“We would like to hear from anyone who saw the two figures in the CCTV image travelling to or from the scene.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened or anyone who has any knowledge of the offence.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Swift at Basingstoke police station on 101, quoting 44160158481.
