A PUBLIC toilet facility in Andover town centre will reopen this weekend following a five week closure.

Test Valley Borough Council has announced this week that the toilets in George Yard will be reopened for members of the public from Saturday 9 July.

The facilities at George Yard and Borden Gates were previously closed at the end of May due to "ongoing problems with drugs".

However the authority has taken the decision to temporarily employ a security guard to patrol in George Yard.

The Borden Gates public toilets will remain closed, as will the baby changing facilities in George Yard.

Portfolio holder for estates and economic development, councillor Peter Giddings, said: “We continue to explore options for a long term solution to the problems caused by drug abuse in the public toilets at George Yard and Borden Gates.

"However, we have made temporary arrangements for a security guard to be present at the public toilets in George Yard, enabling us to reopen them with effect from Saturday 9 July.

"We shall continue to monitor the situation going forward."

Alternative baby changing facilities and toilets are available at Andover Bus Station.
