ANDOVER’s first arch, which will signpost shoppers to businesses located off the High Street, was unveiled this week.

The arch, which is located in George Yard, was unveiled by the Mayor of Test Valley Councillor Karen Hamilton on Wednesday.

Local businesses, councillors and council staff gathered to watch the official opening of the new arch, which has been designed by artist, Peter Clutterbuck.

The idea to enhance signage for the shops along the seven lanes off the High Street came from feedback from the Andover Summit and Encounters initiative, which aimed to rejuvenate the town centre and increase footfall.

This work now continues through the renewed Andover Vision.

The remaining six arches are planned for Union Street, Waterloo Court, Shaw’s Walk, Globe Yard, King’s Yard and Black Swan Yard.

Peter Clutterbuck said: “We have thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and look forward to starting work on the remaining arches. It’s great when you finally get to see pieces finished and in place.”

Leader of the council, Councillor Ian Carr, said: “I’m delighted that the first Andover arch is now in place. I’d like to thank Peter Clutterbuck and his team, the local businesses and all those involved in the arches project for their hard work.”

Peter’s previous work includes the War Memorial Park gate and town entrance sign in Hedge End, the bandstand in Southsea and Falklands memorial arch in Fareham.
